I would recommend this book to:
teens and young adults. Boys especially.

This is the way that humans become animals. Mix one part isolation and limited resources with one part deadly contagion. Season with ignorance, arrogance and despair. Throw in a dash of sophisticated weaponry. Let boil with no end in sight.

This is a chillingly real story. It could happen today. It may be happening, and we would never hear about it. Because those with the power to control communication don't want us to know how close our society lives to collapse. And maybe we don't want to know.

But in the age of the shrinking earth, when disease can span the globe in weeks, it is good to consider the ways in which we fall. And a rousing survival tale with a smattering of first love is one of the best ways!

Another excellent book for crossover classwork. Elegant writing, compelling characters, strong science, and important message make this one equally at home in language arts, biology and civics classrooms. And if you're simply in the mood for a great adventure, it satisfies that as well!
