Bliss is absolutely sweet. At its core it is a coming-of-age tale about a middle child who doesn't think she has much to contribute to her family or the world. She is not as good-looking and charming as her older brother. She's not as bubbly as her younger brother, nor as adorable as her younger sister. Her parents don't entrust her with the interesting tasks in running the family business — which is all the more frustrating in that it is a magical bake shop complete with an heirloom grimoire and blue jars of very special ingredients locked in a hidden root cellar.
So when Rosemary Bliss's parents are called away to help stop a neighboring town's flu epidemic, Rose understandably wants to take the opportunity to show them that she is fully capable as a Bliss baker. And when her mysterious Aunt Lily rides into town on her motorcycle positively dripping confident glamour, Rose has even greater desire to shine.
So she defies her parents and opens up the magical cookbook. At first, she just wants to memorize a few recipes, but of course things get out of control almost as soon as the first magical pastry leaves her hands. So she and her siblings — and eventually Lily, who has designs on the cookbook — set about making everything right. Before their parents get home.
This is, apparently, a first book in a series. Because not everything is fixed at the end. So there is more Bliss to come.
